If you are moving into a new home in the second half of 2026, the next Griha Pravesh windows are in November and December 2026. There is no shubh muhurat in August, September or October because of Chaturmas (the period when Lord Vishnu is believed to be at rest). How a Griha Pravesh muhurat is decided
A pandit checks several factors for your specific date and city:
- Tithi — favourable are Dwitiya, Tritiya, Panchami, Saptami, Dashami, Ekadashi and Trayodashi. Avoid the Rikta tithis (Chaturthi, Navami, Chaturdashi) and Amavasya.
- Nakshatra — Rohini, Mrigashira, Chitra, Anuradha, Uttara Phalguni/Ashadha/Bhadrapada, Revati and a few others are considered good.
- Vaar — Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are generally preferred.
- Lagna and Chandra bala — the rising sign at the chosen time and the Moon’s position relative to your rashi.
- Avoid — Chaturmas, Kharmas / Malmas, the family’s shraddh paksha, and the exact day of an eclipse.
The three types of Griha Pravesh
- Apoorva — entering a newly built house for the first time. Needs the strongest muhurat.
- Sapoorva — re-entering your own house after travel or a long absence.
- Dwandwah — entering a house rebuilt or repaired after damage.
Sapoorva and Dwandwah allow a wider set of dates than Apoorva.
What if I have to move in before a shubh date?
Possession dates and rent cycles do not always line up with the panchang. The common practice is:
- Shift your belongings in on a convenient day, but do not sleep the first night or cook the first meal there until the muhurat.
- Keep a kalash, a photo of your ishta devta and a diya in the puja area from day one.
- Perform the full Griha Pravesh puja — with the first milk-boiling and first cooked meal — on the auspicious date.
Your pandit can also suggest a short “pravesh” sankalp for the interim.
Frequently asked questions
Why are there no Griha Pravesh dates in Sept–Oct 2026?
Those months fall in Chaturmas, when major auspicious ceremonies are traditionally paused. They resume around Dev Uthani Ekadashi in early November.
Can Griha Pravesh be done on any day for a rented flat?
For a rental you are occupying for the first time, a muhurat is still advised, but Sapoorva-type flexibility applies. A simple griha shanti puja is often enough for short tenancies.
Is morning or evening better?
Morning muhurats are generally preferred for Griha Pravesh; the pandit picks the exact window on your date.
How long does the Griha Pravesh puja take?
About 2 to 3 hours for a standard package with a navagraha havan; longer if you add a Satyanarayan katha.
