Satyanarayan Puja is a simple, powerful vrat done on Purnima, after a new beginning, or to give thanks. This guide covers the full vidhi step by step, the samagri list, the katha, and the best days to perform it — so you know exactly what happens whether you do it yourself or book a pandit.

When to perform Satyanarayan Puja

  • Purnima (full moon) — the most common day.
  • Ekadashi, Sankranti or any Thursday.
  • After Griha Pravesh, a wedding, a new job or business, recovery from illness, or a wish fulfilled.

The puja is usually done in the evening, after a light fast through the day. It takes about 1.5 to 2 hours including the katha.

Satyanarayan Puja samagri list

  • Photo or idol of Lord Satyanarayan (Vishnu), a chowki, yellow cloth
  • Kalash, coconut, mango or betel leaves, moli, roli, akshat (unbroken rice)
  • Panchamrit — milk, curd, ghee, honey, sugar; tulsi leaves; gangajal
  • Banana plant stems / leaves, flowers and garlands, seasonal fruit (banana is essential)
  • Sapatha / prasad: sooji (rava) or wheat flour, ghee, sugar and banana for the sheera — traditionally in equal 1.25 (sava) measures
  • Incense, camphor, diya, cotton wicks, dakshina

Satyanarayan Puja vidhi, step by step

  1. Shuddhi & sankalp — clean the space, bathe, and take the sankalp naming the reason for the puja.
  2. Kalash & Ganesh puja — establish the kalash and worship Ganesha for a smooth ritual.
  3. Navagraha & dikpala puja — invoke the nine planets and the guardians of the directions.
  4. Satyanarayan sthapana — install the idol/photo, offer panchamrit abhishek, then vastra, flowers, tulsi, dhoop, deep and naivedya.
  5. Satyanarayan Katha — the pandit reads all five chapters; the family listens with a prayer in hand.
  6. Aarti & prasad — perform the aarti, distribute the sheera prasad and banana to everyone present.

The Satyanarayan Katha in brief

The katha has five adhyays. It begins with Narada asking Vishnu how suffering can be eased in Kaliyuga, and Vishnu prescribing the Satyanarayan vrat. The following chapters tell of a poor brahmin, a woodcutter, a merchant named Sadhu and his son-in-law, and King Tungadhwaja — each of whom prospers when they keep the vrat with faith, and suffers when they forget or belittle it. The message throughout is simple: keep your word, complete what you vow, and share the prasad.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Skipping or cutting short the katha — it is the heart of the puja.
  • Forgetting to take and later fulfil the sankalp.
  • Not distributing the prasad to everyone who attended.
  • Using stale or store-bought sheera instead of preparing it fresh.

Frequently asked questions

Can Satyanarayan Puja be done at home without a pandit?

Yes, families do perform it themselves. A pandit ensures the mantras, navagraha puja and katha are done correctly, especially for a first time or an important occasion.

Is fasting compulsory?

A light fast (fruit and milk) through the day is traditional but not rigid. The vrat is broken with the prasad after the aarti.

Why is banana important?

Banana leaves and fruit are offered to Lord Satyanarayan and form part of the prasad; most families treat them as essential.

How long does it take?

About 1.5 to 2 hours including the five-chapter katha and aarti.
