Akhand Ramayan Path: Vidhi, 24-Hour Format and Samagri List

Written by the Vandanam editorial team, with inputs from our panel of verified Vedic pandits. Last updated September 2026.

An Akhand Ramayan Path is an unbroken recitation of the entire Ramcharitmanas — all seven kands, from Balkand to Uttarkand — completed without a single pause. “Akhand” means exactly that: unbroken. Because the reading cannot stop, it is never done by one person. It takes a mandali, a team of pandits who recite in relay and hand over mid-verse. A standard akhand path runs 24 hours.

Looking to hold an Akhand Ramayan Path?

A verified mandali of four to six pandits recites in relay for 24 hours at your home or hall across Delhi NCR.

Why families hold one

  • A new home or business — to sanctify the space, usually just before or after Griha Pravesh
  • A sankalp fulfilled — a vow taken during illness, a court case or a hard year, completed in thanksgiving
  • Peace in the household — where there is recurring discord or trouble that will not settle
  • In memory of an elder — on a barsi, or during Pitru Paksha
  • Ram Navami and Vivah Panchami — the most auspicious occasions for it

The seven kands

The full Ramcharitmanas is read in order:

  1. Balkand — Ram ji’s birth and childhood, and his marriage to Sita ji
  2. Ayodhyakand — the exile
  3. Aranyakand — the forest years and Sita ji’s abduction
  4. Kishkindhakand — the alliance with Sugriv
  5. Sunderkand — Hanuman ji’s journey to Lanka
  6. Lankakand — the war and Ravan’s defeat
  7. Uttarkand — the return to Ayodhya and the reign of Ram

Balkand is the longest and Sunderkand the most often read on its own — if a full akhand path is more than you need, a Sunderkand Path alone takes about three hours.

The vidhi, step by step

  1. Sthapana. A chowki is set with a clean cloth, and the Ramcharitmanas volumes, Ram Darbar and Hanuman ji are placed on it. A kalash is established beside them.
  2. Sankalp. The pandit takes the sankalp in the family’s name, stating the purpose and the exact hour at which the path will close.
  3. Ganesh puja and Navgraha smaran to begin without obstacle.
  4. Akhand jyot. A ghee lamp is lit and must burn continuously until the path ends. Someone tends it through the night — it must not go out.
  5. The path begins at the sankalp hour. The mandali recites in relay, each acharya taking over as the previous one pauses, so the reading never breaks.
  6. Through the night the family takes turns sitting with the path. There is no requirement for everyone to stay awake.
  7. Purnahuti and havan. As the reading reaches Uttarkand at the 24-hour mark, a havan is performed with the closing ahutis.
  8. Aarti, bhog and bhandara. The path closes with aarti, and prasad or a bhandara is served to all present.

Samagri list

  • Ramcharitmanas volumes — enough copies for the relay
  • Chowki, clean cloth, and a rehal or book stand
  • Ram Darbar and Hanuman ji photos or idols
  • Akhand jyot lamp, plenty of ghee and cotton wicks — enough for a full 24 hours
  • Kalash, mango leaves, coconut, sacred thread
  • Roli, akshat, kalava, supari, betel leaves, dhoop, agarbatti
  • Flowers and garlands, refreshed once during the path
  • Havan kund, samidha, havan samagri, ghee for the purnahuti
  • Panchamrit and fruit for the bhog
  • Mats or dari and seating for guests through the night

Shorter formats

A full day and night is not always practical, particularly in a flat where a room cannot be kept undisturbed. There are two accepted alternatives:

  • Navahn parayan — the same complete text read across nine days, a set portion each day. This is the usual choice for families who want the whole Ramcharitmanas without a continuous vigil.
  • Single kand path — most often Sunderkand, about three hours.

Common questions

How long does an Akhand Ramayan Path take?

A standard akhand path runs 24 hours without a break. A more elaborate path can take 36 to 48 hours. A navahn parayan spreads the same text over nine days.

How many pandits are needed?

Usually four to six, reciting in relay. The number depends on the pace and the format.

Does the akhand jyot really have to burn the whole time?

Yes. Keeping the jyot alight for the full duration is central to an akhand path, and someone is given responsibility for it. Keep spare ghee and wicks to hand.

Does the family have to stay awake for 24 hours?

No. Families take turns sitting with the path and gather for the opening sankalp, the closing havan and the aarti.

Can it be held in a society hall or temple?

Yes, and many families prefer it, because a flat rarely has a room that can stay undisturbed for a full day and night.

What if the recitation is interrupted?

A genuine break is why the relay is planned carefully in advance. If it does happen, the pandit will advise on the prayaschit — usually additional ahutis at the closing havan.
